"to Hell you ride".

If you're a horror fan the names Bill Moseley and Kane Hodder will likely already be on your radar for playing iconic horror characters. Moseley for his character Chop Top in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Otis in Rob Zombie's Firefly trilogy and Hodder for his four appearances as Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th franchise. When films boast names such as these it's often the only good part of the film, however Hayride to Hell is a pleasant surprise to the horror genre.

Hayride to Hell is a horror comedy that's deliciously camp and features an unhinged venge-fuelled Bill Moseley as Farmer Sam. Sam is slowly being edged out of his land and he bets those trying to take his farm that he can provide the scariest "hayride to hell" to prove his farm is worth staying. After inviting them to the hayride's official opening, the guests soon realise it's not the family friendly Halloween experience they were expecting...

With one-liners from Moseley such as, "I oughta piss on your foot", it's difficult to take this film seriously, but that's what is so wickedly funny about it. With all of the silliness of franchises like Wrong Turn, Hayride to Hell proves to be one of the best horror comedies I've seen for a while. The story is original, the kills are creative but believable, and it's a film that could easily spawn many sequels. The music and sound effects are also worth a mention as everything's arranged perfectly to slowly build momentum and tension.

Moseley's chemistry with Hodder's character, Sheriff Jubel was undeniable and the showdown between these two icons is every horror fan's dream answered. Moseley's overexaggerated portrayal of Farmer Sam is one of my favourite roles of his, and is certainly a memorable one. While the acting from the rest of the cast isn't the best I've seen, it does little to detract from the absolute joyride this film is. A standout performance comes from Peter Patrikios who plays multiple characters, but most notably the mad scientist. He's certifiably terrifying and his brief appearance makes such an impact.

Hayride to Hell was surprisingly comical, sharp-witted and one of the funniest horror movies I've seen for a long time. The horror genre is missing more films like this one and I hope to see more from this film in the future.

Hayride to Hell is on digital and on demand from September 24th from Breaking Glass Pictures
