Seven years after the death of Edward Hyde, a stylish gentleman shows up in foggy London claiming to be Dr Henry Jekyll. Only Mr Utterson, Jekyll's faithful lawyer and confidant, knows that he must be an impostor because Jekyll was Hyde. But as the man goes about charming Jekyll s friends and reclaiming his estate, and as the bodies of potential challengers start piling up, Utterson is left fearing for his life ... and questioning his own sanity.
This brilliantly imagined and beautifully written sequel to one of literature s greatest masterpieces perfectly complements the original work. And where the original was concerned with the duality of man, this sequel deals with the possibility of identity theft of the most audacious kind. Can it really be that this man who looks and acts so precisely like Dr Henry Jekyll is an imposter?
As a huge lover of classics, when I saw that there had been a sequel written to one of my all time favourites, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, you can imagine my excitement. The lovely people at Black & White Publishing asked me if I'd like a copy and if I wanted to be part of the blog tour...silly question, really.
I feel as though you would appreciate this book a lot more if you've read Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as the characters are very similar and obviously, there are a lot of references to the first book, so you're understanding would be a lot better. Although saying that, I believe you could enjoy this as a standalone book.
One of the things I loved most about this book is the ease of it. Classics are sometimes very tough to get into and I expected to be taking notes throughout, as they can get quite confusing. It was definitely not the case with this book. If you're looking to dip your toe into the world of classics before diving into the deep end of Dracula and Anna Karenina, this is the perfect book for you.
The story focuses on Gabriel Utterson, Dr Jekyll's lawyer. It's been almost seven years since the death of Mr Hyde and the disappearance of Dr Jekyll. Utterson is about to take over Jekyll's estate but as the close to the seventh year draws nearer, Utterson is shocked to find Dr Jekyll has returned...
Jekyll doesn't seem quite the same and despite everyone else believing he has returned, Utterson is convinced he is an imposter, trying to steal Jekyll's estate. After several mysterious deaths surrounding Jekyll's closest friends, upon "Jekyll's" return, Utterson takes it upon himself to unearth the truth of what's really going on.
He believes the potion that Jekyll used to transform into Mr Hyde is the answer and he starts on his journey of uncovering the recipe. But he discovers some terrifying things along the way, things he would have rather not found out...
Is he going mad? Why can no one see what he sees? Will we discover the truth? Find out in this incredible book. Full of tension, mystery and drama. A must read, especially with Halloween approaching.
